Micro Goals: The Art of Taking Small Steps

Process goals are the short-term goals that equestrian athletes set out to achieve while working towards their long-term goals. Think of these as micro goals. These goals focus on techniques, skills, and strategies in all realms of equestrian sport. Micro goals are meant to be worked towards in the here and now, versus long-term goals that can sometimes seem out of reach. These goals can build a sense of purpose and confidence. They are also important building blocks to develop athletes towards their long-term goals and big dreams!

With equestrian athletes, micro goals can be developed in different categories. Some micro goals focused on skill development include concepts like working on having a good seat, developing better communication or feel, or developing a better eye to jumps. Equestrian athletes can also set process goals related to their horsemanship. This can include developing a deeper understanding of their horse, improving their horsemanship skills, or learning to recognize their horse's cues. These goals are meant to help an athlete become a better horseman and to develop a strong bond with their horse.

Micro goals are also important in relation to mental preparation and motivation. This can include setting positive affirmations, visualizing success, and developing strong focus and concentration. These goals are meant to help the athlete stay motivated and focused throughout training and competition.

Lastly, equestrian athletes can also set process goals related to their physical preparation and recovery. This might look like having a specific exercise routine, developing a healthy diet, and having a consistent sleep schedule. These goals are meant to ensure that the athlete is physically prepared for the rigors of the sport.

Process goals are a key component of any equestrian athlete's success. By setting short-term goals and working towards them, equestrian athletes can stay motivated and focused on their long-term goals. By setting micro goals, equestrian athletes can also take ownership of their learning and check in with their own progress. Micro goals are the first building blocks of success as an equestrian!
